Rain rain it’s okay, at Birch Hill we still play!

One thing we don’t do at camp is let anything rain on our parade; especially rain! Nobody can ever truly know what the weather will do while we’re at camp enjoying the great outdoors, that’s why we come prepared. When getting ready for camp, our campers pack all their essential needs for wet weather. This means raincoats and waterproof shoes, sometimes-even umbrellas. Camp Birch Hill staff also come prepared with all kinds of fun activities to do when the wet weather strikes.
One of the most exciting wet weather activities we have at camp is Casino Night. For this event we turn the rec hall into a Casino where we play a wide range of different games. Each cabin is given a bunch of poker chips and the aim is to get as many as you can per cabin. Whichever cabin has the most, wins. This means they get Birch Hill Cup points and get to choose a counselor to be in their cabin for a day. Some of the games offered at Casino night are Ping-Pong, ski-ball, hula-hoop, limbo, and roulette. Campers love casino night. It brings out a lot of different skills and talent that campers can show off; there is always a game for everyone’s taste.
Another rainy day activity we put on is the Rainy Day Rotation Stations where campers go from station to station doing different activities. Campers go to the art pavilion for arts and crafts, the cafeteria for bingo and board games, and the rec hall for trivia, sock wrestling and other interactive games. These kind of rotations are a great way for cabins to bond with each other as the go from place to place completing different activities.
Miss Birch Hill and the Birch Hill Talent show are also a favorite rainy day activity. Campers have enjoyed these events for years because they create a lot of laughter. For Miss Birch Hill each cabin gets to dress up a male counselor to perform in a beauty pageant. The counselors have to have a special talent and be able to really impress the crowd. The Birch Hill Talent shows allows campers and counselors to showcase their talents of singing, dancing, cheering, from a human pretzel to karate, ukulele playing to whistling we love seeing our campers and counselors on the stage.
At camp we like to turn a rainy day into something really fun. If it’s raining we just get wet anyways. We set up the slip n’ slide and make the most of it. Rain is good for the earth so we welcome it knowing that the sun will come back out soon and regular activities will carry on. YAHOO!
